You can sketch blocks of trees in the landscape as bands of tone, as in these examples of aerial perspective where the foreground trees are shaded in darker tones. The strips of conifers on the mountain slopes (above right) are sketched simply as vertical zigzags, with foreground trees rendered in more detailed horizontal zigzags.
